Description:

This project's aim is to strengthen the pipeline of public health laboratory (PHL) professionals, and thus, strengthen everyday PHL
practice as well as emergency preparedness and response by: (1) establishing a National Public Health Laboratory Fellowship
Program that will strengthen and expand existing CDC-APHL public health laboratory fellowships and (2) developing and
implementing a new public health internship and genomic data internship program for eligible students to gain meaningful
experiences in public health laboratory settings.

emergency preparedness and response by: (1) establishing a National Public Health Laboratory Fellowship Program that will
strengthen and expand existing CDC-APHL public health laboratory fellowships and (2) developing and implementing a new public
health internship and genomic data internship program for eligible students to gain meaningful experiences in public health
laboratory settings. These programs are intended to address ongoing PHL workforce shortages, exacerbated by the COVID-19

Goals/Purpose

pandemic, that are the result of an aging workforce, high turnover, increasing complexity of skills needed as technology advances,
decreases in clinical laboratory science education programs, increasing demand for laboratory services, low awareness of the
profession among the public, and competition from the private sector.

Objective:

The objectives are to: 1) revamp and expand the existing APHL-CDC Fellowship Program to support an increased number of
fellows, strengthen the program curriculum and evaluation, and possibly create new fellowship tracks; and 2) create short-term
internships (e.g., 12-16 weeks) for current Associate, Bachelor's, and Master's students to expose them to the public health
laboratory field, reveal potential careers in public health, and give students an applied learning experience in a state, local, or
territorial public health laboratory.

Does your project measure health disparities among Yes
populations/groups experiencing social, economic,
geographic, and/or environmental disadvantages?:
Does your project investigate underlying

/groups experiencing social, economic, geographic,
and/or environmental disadvantages?:

Yes

Does your project propose, implement, or evaluate
an action to move towards eliminating health
inequities?:

Yes

Activities or Tasks:

New Collection of Information, Data, or Biospecimens

Target Populations to be Included/Represented:

General US Population

Tags/Keywords:

Laboratory Personnel ; Students ; Fellowships and Scholarships ; Internship, Nonmedical

CDC's Role:

CDC employees will provide substantial technical assistance or oversight

Method Categories:

Survey

Methods:

CDC will collect demographic information from applicants and the selected participants to the fellowship and internship programs
through completely voluntary and anonymous surveys.

Collection of Info, Data or Biospecimen:

Demographic information will be garnered completely anonymously through online surveys that cannot be linked back to applicants
or selected program participants.

Expected Use of Findings/Results and their impact:

CDC will use the demographic data to gauge success of promotion and recruitment efforts to increase the participation of
underrepresented groups in the programs.
